Ask Thorn, a perennial herb. Rootstock creeping-rooted, black or dark brown. Above-ground stems erect, 2-type. Nutrient stems arise after the spore stems wither, 15-60 cm tall, with 6-15 ridges. Leaves reduced, united proximally into sheaths, sheath teeth lanceolate, black, margins grayish white, membranous; branches whorled, medium solid, with 3-4 ridges, single or re-branched. Spore stems first in early spring, often purple-brown, fleshy, unbranched, sheaths long and large. Sporangia spikes emerge in May-June, terminal, blunt-headed, 2-3.5 cm long; sporangia hexagonal, peltate bearing, spirally arranged, margins bearing long shaped sporangia. Spores monomorphic.
